Legend has it that a great treasure is buried within the ground of the Chateau de Belcastel. This theory is supported by the fact that former Chateau resident Alzias de Saunhac was a descendant of Guillaume de Saunhac, the Grand Master of the Knights Templar of Jerusalem, and by the fact that the Château de Belcastel lies on the Paris Meridian (running through the cathedral in Rodez), also known as the Roseline. The Meridian is marked by a medallion in the village. The Château’s connection to the Knights Templar has brought it into the controversy surrounding the immense wealth of François Bérenger Saunière (1852-1917). |
