Fernand Pouillon, (1912-1986)

Fernand Pouillon is a renowned humanist architect who built more than 3 million square meters of public housing during his lifetime. He was born in Cancon, Lot-et-Garonne, and grew up in Marseille, and moved to Paris to study architecture. When he discovered the ruin of Belcastel’s castle in the Aveyron, he decided to buy it and restore it and make it his home. He has a place in the pantheon of great architects alongside Perret, Baltard and Le Corbusier.

The medieval fortress of Belcastel begins with a 9th century chapel and grew over the centuries as generations of nobles and knights and rogues built their legacies within the stronghold. In the 1970s, the famous architect Fernand Pouillon restored this Aveyron castle.
